ANTIMICROBIAL  RESISTANCE

The Evolution of Microbes.  The Development of Drugs.

Antimicrobial resistance is the mutation and evolution of microorganisms to resist medications used to combat them.  Although AMR is a natural phenomenon, it is accelerated with the overuse of antimicrobials. Today, resistance is one of the most pressing global health issues; causing at least two million illnesses and over thirty thousand deaths each year in the U.S. alone. Treating resistant infections costs the U.S. an estimated $20 billion in health care costs and $35 billion in other society costs annually.
